Car key services on the South Shore: unlock, duplicate, and replace
Car keys disappear at the worst moment: mall parking lots, before a meeting, or in the middle of winter. Unlike house keys, modern car keys include an electronic chip that must be programmed for your engine to start.
Car key types: why this matters
Not all car keys are replaced the same way. Knowing your key type helps you understand the process and expected timing.
Classic mechanical key
A simple metal key with no electronics. Still found on some older or basic vehicles. Duplication is usually fast and straightforward.
Transponder key
Standard on most vehicles since the 2000s. A chip inside the key head communicates with the anti-theft system. If the chip is not recognized, the engine will not start even if the key physically turns. Duplication requires programming.
Remote key
A transponder key with built-in lock and unlock buttons. Very common on vehicles from the 2010s to today. Replacement and programming are required.
Proximity key / Smart Key
The key stays in your pocket while the vehicle detects it for entry and start. Replacement is more complex and needs specialized programming equipment.
Situation 1: You are locked out of your vehicle
Keys on the seat. In the trunk. Or in a bag left inside for one second. This is the most common automotive emergency.
What a locksmith does: uses non-destructive entry tools to unlock the door in minutes, without breaking glass or damaging the locking mechanism.
What to avoid: do not try coat hangers or improvised tools through the window. On modern vehicles this can damage weather seals, trigger side-airbag components, or harm electronic locks. Repairs can cost much more than a locksmith call.
Typical timeline: NT Security can travel across the South Shore quickly based on availability. Actual unlocking usually takes less than 15 minutes once on site.
Situation 2: You lost a key (but still have one)
You still have a spare at home, great. But duplicate that remaining key as soon as possible before things get more difficult.
Why not wait? If you lose the second key without a backup, you move into an all keys lost situation, which is slower and more expensive.
For transponder keys, remote keys, and smart keys, duplication is not a simple hardware-store service. A certified locksmith must program the new key to the anti-theft system. Without that step, the door may open but the engine will not start.
Situation 3: You lost all keys
This is the most stressful scenario and often the most expensive if delayed or handled by the wrong provider.
With no reference key, the locksmith must generate a new key code and program it into the vehicle system from scratch. This is possible on most modern vehicles with proper equipment and credentials.
NT Security is NASTF certified (National Automotive Service Task Force), which gives access to secure manufacturer programming data required by many recent vehicles.
What you will need:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), visible on the dashboard or registration documents
- A valid photo ID
- Vehicle registration documents to prove ownership
Tip: keep a photo of your VIN in email or cloud storage. In emergencies, this can speed up service significantly.
Automotive locksmith vs dealership: the real difference
People often think dealership first for car keys, but that is not always the best option for cost or timing.
| Criteria | Certified automotive locksmith | Dealership |
|---|---|---|
| Turnaround | Often same day | Often several days |
| On-site service | Yes | No |
| Cost | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Availability | Flexible, emergency-friendly | Business hours only |
| Manufacturer data access | Yes (NASTF) | Yes |
| Evening service | Until 11:30 PM (NT Security) | No |
A NASTF-certified locksmith can access the same programming data as a dealership, without long waits or towing your vehicle.
Why duplicate a key now before you need it
Preventive duplication is usually the least expensive and least stressful choice. A backup key made in advance:
- Helps you avoid emergency lockouts at night or in winter
- Costs much less than full all keys lost replacement
- Can be safely stored at home or with someone you trust
If you only have one key, now is the right time to duplicate it. NT Security can come to you or serve you in Brossard.

Frequently asked questions
Can a car key be programmed without a dealership?
Yes. A NASTF-certified locksmith can access the same programming systems and provide service at your location.
How long does key duplication or programming take?
For programmed duplication, expect around 30 to 60 minutes depending on the vehicle. All keys lost cases may take longer.
Do you provide evening lockout service?
Yes. Emergency service is available until 11:30 PM depending on area and availability.
Do I need to prove ownership?
Yes. We require photo ID and registration documents before any intervention.
My remote is not working. Do I need a full replacement?
Not always. If the engine still starts, a dead battery may be the issue. If neither remote nor start works, we can diagnose it.
Do you cover all South Shore areas?
Yes. We serve Brossard, Longueuil, La Prairie, Boucherville, Saint-Lambert, Candiac, Chateauguay, Saint-Hubert, Sainte-Julie, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, and nearby cities.
